MYTH: Good Steaks Are Expensive

FACT: Not all that glitters are gold... and not all steaks are expensive. Hence, I'm sharing to you my Top 5 list of places with mouthwatering and cheap steaks for cheapskates (no, don't hastily imply that I am one).

--prices are mostly less than PhP200

Snackaroo
Matalino Street Diliman / Kamuning, Quezon City

Sitting at the corner of Judge Jimenez Street and K-2nd Street in Kamuning is a small eatery that happens to be a steak place. You can recognize that they are serving steaks because you can smell a waft of marinade-on-a-charcoal that will definitely trigger the steak-centers of your brain in a heartbeat. At the price of Php150, you can either choose a good cut of T-Bone or Porterhouse. Personally, I like the T-Bone better since it has more portions of meat. It may be too salty for some but the sweetness of the gravy perfectly complements the taste. You can also enjoy their other Filipino viands (e.g. caldereta, bopis, sisig) and experience that some kind of carinderia feel. Oh, make sure to bring a fan and handkerchief -- it can really get hot inside the place. Another branch is also open along Matalino Street near Kalayaan Avenue.

Rub Ribs
64 Scout Rallos Tomas Morato, Quezon City

Lining up to get a table for almost an hour is really worth the wait. Yes, their steaks are yummy, but there is more than the taste of their steaks. Their cheerful and helpful crews who are ready to serve us anytime and offer suggestions lasted a good impression during my first visit-- yes, they matter, really. Ordering a Single (inclusive of 1 slab of back ribs, 1 sidings and rice) will already give a tummy's delight. For voracious carnivores, an order of Super Duo (2 ribs and 2 sidings) will already satisfy your steak fantasy. I like the juiciness and the tenderness of their baby back ribs. Finishing every side of the bone is just as easy as 1,2,3. Their side dishes are also a must try! My personal favorite is their bacon and potato salad sidings. With the success of its business, I wonder why the owner cannot find a bigger place (or at least expand?). I advise to visit during off peak hours, or you might find yourself lining up and die under the craving of their steaks while waiting.

Rap Steaks and Cakes
Ortigas Home Depot Dona Julia Vargas Avenue Ortigas, Pasig City

Just the name of it, it feels like home for me already. They also serve beers by the way. As far as my cheap steak list is concerned, this is the only place where you will be asked "how would you like your steak done?" LEGIT! It comes as a meal (inclusive of rice) and their delicious gravy sauce that is generously served with garlic and worcestershire sauce. They would not have put "Cakes" on their name for nothing. Order a Revel bar and Brazo de Mercedes after you finish your steak and you are good to have sweet dreams after.

WOGO Ribs and Pasta

16 Maginhawa St. UP Village, Quezon City

This place was under the radar not until we discovered it as we were driving along Maginhawa street for almost 30 minutes in the search for something special to eat. We passed by this place and this piqued our curiosity. No flashing signs or long lines outside the place. No search for reviews over the internet was done and we took the risk to try their food. Their Rib Eye Steak is the most expensive in their menu (Php275), but I can peg the tenderness and tastiness of the steak to be worth a thousand bucks.

Big Daddy Jay's

61B 17th Avenue Cubao, Quezon City

Aside from the fact that this is just 2 streets away from our house, their baby back ribs is definitely incomparable. Slicing a piece from the ribs with oil drippings and the smokey charbroiled smell will surely place you in an amnesic and orgasmic state for a while. The place is perfect if you want to bring your family out for a lunch date on a Sunday. I already paid a couple of visit to this place but I seldom see them crowded. I assure the food explorers out there that this is worth your money for an experience of good food. They will not be listed in the top 50 restaurants of 2013 by Spot.ph for nothing. Thank God for sending Daddy Jay here.
Because good food doesn't have to be expensive.
